This week’s ECN local-project spotlight features the Virginia Haiti Collaborative. According to a church press release, the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia received a $9,850 grant for “a project to establish education resources and communication around a larger project to provide solar power for St. Marc’s Episcopal School in Cerca la Source, Haiti.”

According to its Facebook page, “The Virginia Haiti Collaborative is a group of churches, schools and individuals partnering with St. Marc’s in Cerca-la-Source to improve education in Haiti. From September 2009 until it’s completion in October 2011, the Collaborative raised more than $90,000 to build a new school for St. Marc’s, provide daily lunch for students, and pay teachers’ salaries. Currently, the Collaborative fundraises and sends $1,800 each month to support the running of the school.”
Way to go St. Marc’s, and way to go Diocese of SW Virginia!
Full disclosure: ECN’s new volunteer deputy editor was a member of the committee that awarded these grants. Both volunteer editors are now volunteers on the task force that will administer the next round of grants.
