This year, General Convention — the legislative governing body of the Episcopal Church — passed 19 resolutions for the care of God’s creation. Each Tuesday, we feature one here!
2018-C021: “Climate Change and additional support for EC Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility”
Calls on the Executive Council and the Church Pension Fund to identify 10 companies in which the church owns stock, and “initiate shareholder engagement to advocate for the inclusion of an expert in sustainability on their boards.”
Read alongside resolutions A061 and D068, a pattern supporting responsible investing emerges: A061 establishes a Task Force on Theology of Money to consider (among other things) the church’s approach to responsible investing, and D068 requests that the Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility (CCSR) develop criteria to assess church investment in companies that are inconsistent with the church’s mission and ethical teaching (including the care of creation).
