Church Resolutions: Carbon Tax

This year, General Convention — the legislative governing body of the Episcopal Church — passed 19 resolutions for the care of God’s creation. Each Tuesday, we feature one here!

2018-C020: “Carbon Tax”

The resolution supports public policy to stop further climate change, including the possibility of a Carbon Fee and Dividend such as the “scientifically-based proposal with bipartisan appeal” proposed by the “non-partisan non-profit Citizens’ Climate Lobby.” C020 also prioritizes protecting the poor from the cost of such policies, an important task for advocates of environmental justice. Cites Psalm 24:1 as a theological basis: “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.”
